Chapter 33 1/3
JAC: There was business to wind up at corporate headquarters in New York, and farewells to say in London. With everything taken care of, on November 11th I boarded Pan Am Flight 1 to Hawai'i. Every minute of the five hours from the West Coast was a blessed mental and emotional separation. I landed at Honolulu and shuttled to the inter-island terminal. After the cool dryness of the plane, the smell of flowers and the richness of the warm island air wrapped me in a welcoming breeze. I caught Hawaiian Flight 818 to Maui.
Taking a cab from Kahului airport, I found myself on the same road across the isthmus I had traveled five years before. I was happy to be alone with my thoughts and remember a promise made to myself, and kept.
I reached the home that Roger Somers had crafted for me to my heart's yearning. There are moments in a life where you look on something new for the first time and you know, to a certainty, whether it is right or wanting. It was so right.
I strolled around to the ocean side and stood on the lanai, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves. The sliding door was unlocked. I took a deep breath and walked into the rest of my life.
